Hello all! My husband and I just got a Husky/Malamute puppy Tundra (8 weeks tomorrow!) and we are very excited. I am a little nervous because from my understanding she's going to get pretty big! When is the best time to put her in training classes? We are already working on "come" and her chewing habits. She's also learning and mimicking her older brother (black lab) which is a good thing I guess. :)

Can't wait to read more about your dogs :)

Hiya welcome to the forum Jessica.
Your puppy training can start now but only in the home or secure garden.
The vets recommend puppy training and socialising with other dogs a week after the puppy has had its final vaccination.
I have just taken all 3 of my puppies one is 11 weeks old and the other two are 13 weeks old out for their first proper walk of ten minutes this morning.
But we have been allowing them out to play and doing lead training in the garden since we got them.
We have also been doing recall training in the garden and house too, Odin has this down to a perfect T he knows that if he comes he gets a huge cuddle and fuss and he loves cuddles and fuss. The other two are girls and i just get stared at by two sets of icy blue eyes lol.
Have you got a photo of your new girl. From the few huskamutes i have seen there are absolutely no lookalikes, each ones different.

Hey Jessica! Welcome to the forum, if you need any help just shout :)

In regards to training I would start straight away in your own home as Bev has already mentioned, the earlier you can do it the better!
If you are thinking of attending pro dog training courses, from personal experience I would say they are beneficial to a point, if you have owned Huskies before or other high maintenance dogs then you wont get a great deal from it. If however your new to the breed then its a great way to get the basics right and to learn a few different techniques, the more you know the better with Huskies!
I took our pup Logan once a week for two months and after that it seemed silly paying money for something I already knew, it was more for socialising Logan with other pups that we even considered it and was great for my partner who didn't have enough confidence with dogs.

But everyone is different so if you feel dog trainers are the way too go then by all means ring around and speak to a few before you decide, you will get a lot more from it if you get on with the trainer! And not all of them are what they make out, ask to see certificates or if you can ask people with personal experiences with them do so, as its far to easy for your average Joe to make up a certificate or two and start dog training classes.

Hope this helps :)

Wow that is so very tiny, storm was bigger than that and he was only 4 weeks old.
Odin is a tiny wee scrap though but he is catching up to his other playmates pretty quickly.
On a final note Tundra is one of the most beautiful puppies i have ever seen.

Hi and welcome to the forum, she is very cute. Dr Ian Dunbar recommends starting to train you puppy from as young as possible, 6 weeks is ideal, my Malamute learned all his tricks when he was just 7 weeks old and now that he is an 86lb one year old has still not forgotten anything. Teaching him something new on the other hand if much harder. Bev is right about Socializing with other dogs and the pup needs all its shots before this can take place.

5 pounds in weight ? do you mean 5 kilos? she is very tiny if she is only 5 pounds.
Chris how come your little one was only 7 weeks when you got him?.
Storm was only 4 which is horrible but that's not a story i shall tell on here as to why he came to me so young. but he has turned out ok.
A little gangly but he is the size of a mally with the ears of a GSD, the eyes of the gentleness of a husky. Intelligence is one thing he excels in but he's as daft as a brush lol

5 lbs is so little! Denali was 10 lbs at 8 weeks, I'd think a mal/husky mix would be bigger. Are you sure she's 8 weeks old? (not trying to be mean or anything, just asking!)

I can't wait to see how her mask marking develop and change, she's beautiful!!

She was 8 weeks on Thanksgiving. I cant believe how tiny she is after looking at pictures of other puppies her age. The vet said she is active and healthy.

She is now becoming more independent and loves to chew on my labs tail (he loves it too and will often bite it right next to her haha).

Any tricks on how to teach her to lay down? Shes having a hard time grasping the concept. She has however, learned to sit and wait for her food and that barking at me will not get her anywhere. :)

Once you have "sit", "down" is a natural progression, theres a couple of ways which people have shown me. The first is simply with a colar and lead and standing on the lead very close to his collar so he naturally has to lay down to be comfortable, and rewarding and giving lots of praise like "Good Down". A lot of dog trainers use this method but it didnt work that great for my pup Logan. We got him in the sit position and laid down on the floor with him offering a treat just out of reach as low as possible so he stretched out and laid down, once he did that we gave lots of praise, again with "Good down". He now knows "down" without us having to move, simply say the word with a treat in our hand, huskys are very smart and it shouldnt take you long getting them to do simple commands.

Hope this helps :)

We did the same as Dan using a treat, once they are sat reward them for sitting and then show them the treat in your hand and lay your hand face up on the floor they have to lay down to get the treat. Keep persevering and you will get there.

What a Beautiful Girl You Have!!! Shes A Stunning Husky/mute and Gunner's a cutie too :biggrin The Most important training i think is Most definitley socialising her unsocialezd dogs are a big problem where i live i have more arguments with people around the area than anything else, my Marley is friendly and wants to make friends everywhere she goes but unfortunatly other dogs that arent socializied tend to be very agressive and try and attack her this can be cut out by takin a dog to a dog park or if u see another dog owner that u know or even dont know call to them from a safe distant and ask can u let Tundra meet there dog But only if they say there dogs ok with others i know its scary to let ur babie near a strange dog but ul be helping her in the long run, a girl i know recently got got a Japenese Akita and he loved playin with Marley we hadnt seen him for a while and unfortunatley he reaction to marley when they last met was an attempt to attack her i guess what im saying is they have to keep gettin socialized all through their life. Also Recall is Very Very Important in these high Prey driven Breeds :biggrin Wishing U, Ur Husband , Tundra And Gunner All The Best For The Future and A Merry Christmas Too :MerrySong
