Have a 9 week old and will not settle at night, I am crate training her and feel bad as she cried for 3 hours constant so gave up and found that she had messed everywhere, so slept with her, do I try again tonight or let her sleep upstairs with me where I dare say she will stay.

Hi Maxine, first off,, welcome.
please please do not take your pup with you to bed, crate training can be hard and sometimes seam cruel, but please believe me it does get better.
First off, before you put to bed take her outside to go to the toilet, if it means you staying out there with her for how ever long do so untill she has gone.
then put her in her crate, you can put an old sweater or something with your scent on it in with her for comfort but dont make a fuss of her before you close the door.
she will cry for a while but thats to be expected, they are like babies if you go to her she will carry on doing it.
please do not give in, its hard i know ive been there but a few sleepless nights is well worth it in the end.

Hiya, welcome to the forum hope you enjoy your stay.
And as these guys said and as i said in my pm toilet before bed, try to keep her awake and play say about 6 ish too, that way she will be tired at bedtime.
Give it another shot with the tshirt like i said in the pm rob a few from a charity shop if you haven't got any that are past it.
What times her last meal?
And finally don't give up, don't lose faith in yourself or your puppy you will get there, most of us have been there already.
Does she know basic training yet like sit, lay down and high five or paw.
If not then you could use those as part of her evening routine. It gives you both some together time, you can use treats like tiny cubes of cheese (smaller than a baked bean) that also teaches gentleness in taking treats too, then wind the evening down with some cuddles while you do whatever it is you do to chill out before bed.
then do toilet outside, in the crate, a simple good girl if she goes in with no fussing.
Turn out the light and retire yourself.
Don't be tempted to go back down, (as i explained to you storm knows when neils home he can pound his crate and neil goes running with a grumble lol, when im at home on my own storm waits silently til i get up even as late as 8.30 to 9am) that is what you get when you give up and give in and go back to the crate.
It's heartbreaking to hear them cry i know but she needs routine too, rules and boundaries. Exercise, training, then affection.
good luck with it all and were here if you need us.

Welcome Maxine!
As Bev said you need to be tough but fair! Your pup is still young so her bladder control wont be strong enough to hold the whole night so make sure she goes toilet before bed time, i would then come down half way through the night and take her otuside to go again that way you wont be coming down in the morning to a messy crate and an unhappy puppy!
The important bit when you come down half way through is to not fuss her at all! clip her lead on and take her to were you want her to go toilet (it will help if she has the smell of her wee/poop there already) and dont leave until she has gone, when she does plenty of praise, and then straight back into the crate. Stick to this routine and you will be toilet training aswell as crate training so the whole process will become easier, once she has stronger control of her bowels you can take this out but having her go toilet in the crate will just make her see the crate as a horrible place to be.
Remember to take your time with crate training a lot of people just put them straight inside without making it a positive place to be, you need to start feeding, playing and anything she enjoys inside the crate as she will associate the crate as her safe place. Place it in a sociable area with her toys inside so she gets used to going inside without panicing, you might find in time she will go in off her own back, dogs like having a den so her natural instinct will be to settle here over time.
Every dog is different though and what works for some wont work for others, with my rescue i slept on a bedchair next to the crate and slowly moved further away as the week progreseed, if he cried i would tell him firmly "NO" he soon understood that it didnt get him anywhere and would just fall asleep instead.

I didnt put my pup cody in a crate at night i wasnt strong enough. i think its up to you and what you want to do.
cody slept at the side of my bed to start then he came on to the bed for cuddles and now at 10 months old he comes up for a fuss when we go to bed and then takes himself back down stairs and sleeps there. my alarm goes off at 6 and if that fails to wake me cody hears my alarm and wakes me up lol. im lucky so far no chewing so he is fine to be out and about at night.
word of warning tho if you do let her up stairs you have to learn to deal with the fur......everywhere.
