hey everyone! got my first Husky last friday ..they have always been a dream dog of mine and I was lucky enough to find one at the pound. Her name is Kia and I wish I could say all was well, I seem to have miscalculated just how much they shed so my bed is covered in fur lmao other than that and her refusal to eat dog food it's a dream come true so I am here for advice on getting her to chow down

Welcome the forum Rayne, you've definitely come to the right place for advice on Kia, she looks lovely by the way
Huskies blow their coats 1-2 times a year and this can last for up to 6 weeks [roughly] and in that time it will get everywhere and doesn't stop, be prepared for bags of the stuff
I groom once a day on the blow. The rest of the time grooming 1-2 times a week will keep shedding to a minimum. I'd invest in a Furminator ASAP, I and many others have found this to be one of the best tools for the job. There's a link to a cheap website on the forum HERE
Now for the feeding help we'll need so more details, how old is she, what's her weight, what's her height, how long in the pound, what was she eating there and was she eating it. Any info on her history prior to the pound will help too. Remember she will be very nervous at the moment too.
Have a good read through the Raw Feeding Advice section of the forum and ask questions whenever you're unsure.

Well done on the rescue that is awesome, and welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your stay with us.
Kia looks gorgeous
.
Food wise there is a huge amount of information on raw feeding on the forum, but if you get stuck then just shout out and we will all try to help you out.
Yes they shed a lot lol, Silver is now 3 years old and i miscalculated how much they lose too, i thought she shed a lot before, but apparently the past few coat blows have simply been breaking us in gently lol.
Any ways enjoy the forum and your new furkid too xxx

thank you for all the kind words and shedding help lol
she is about 2 years old and I would guess like..65ish lbs? her vet visit is next week so I don't know the weight for sure (already has all of her shots) and she was in the pound for only a few days with a Malamute to my knowledge (I checked the site regularly for one and the second I saw her I went and got her lol)
the last owner left a note saying she liked salmon mixed with her food so I had a can of salmon thanks to my grandpa ..she ate it and totally didn't touch the wet or dry food I got her. So I am thinkin' vegetarian or not that raw feeding is my only hope with her..I have always heard bad rumors on giving a dog raw meat or lots of meat (makes them mean etc) but looking here and on the net thanks to an answer on yahoo answers I see this isn't really the case and a lot of people prefer raw feeding to bag food

Welcome Rayne! Kia looks lovely, well done for rescuing her! Have you owned any other dogs? The blowing can be quite severe when they are blowing, its crazy how much fur you will actually take off!
If you look through the raw feeding section of the forum you will see a number of pinned threads that will help get you started on the raw! Kia will love it and its great that shes already keen on the salmon as that can be one of the hardest to persuade a husky to eat. Although it can be expensive try and stick with fresh salmon where possible, the same with any other meats, tinned wont have any where near the same amount of nutrients.
If you get stuck just let us know and we will be happy to help

ahh sad to hear about your GSD, hopefully Kia will help fill the void
Huskies are known to be picky at times, best to be tough on them from the start. Put food down for ten minutes, if she doesnt eat remove it until next feeding time, she will soon realise that your in charge of what food she eats, dont give in to those soppy eyes lol
You might also find that she wont eat every day, my older sibe will go a few days without food, they are pretty good at self regulating. With Kia its probably due to the transition of the pound to your home but im sure once she realises its her home too things will become easier

Congrats Rayne on the new family member and kudos for doing it through rescue. Don't worry, you'll get used to the tubbleweeds of fur around the house and keep in mind that stress can worsen the shedding so think of what she's been through...maybe next season won't be so severe (we can hope, right?). Same with the eating...change of place, stress, etc - dogs feel it same as we do. This is definitely the right place to be for help - everyone's great and there's a wealth of info here. Good luck.

Good for you for saving a pound dog! Hopefully it was one of the Huskies in my urgent album from TX
The Furminator will definitely be your best friend. I thought I got a lot of fur from Kita before I got one...but oh goodness you haven't seen anything!
Yes, they can definitely be picky too. Like all said above stress can do a lot. Kita sometimes wont eat for a day or two, for seemingly no reason at all. You will get used to the husky quirks eventually, and trust me...there can be plenty. Good luck and congratulations!
