Hi All

My name is Chris and my Hubby is Phil.

We have officially caught the Siberian Bug.

We acquired Misha 6 months ago from a rescue cente knowing nothing about the breed but falling in lve with the big blue eyes. She was 10 months old and had been badly treated. Sge arrived with us massively under weight and shying away from us. Immediatly after getting her home we knew this was going to take some work. She is now 16 moths old and full of herself. so 6 months later we are hooked so we contacted siberian resue association and start our hunt for number 2. Along comes bandit - 14 month old male with chocolate drops for eyes.

They are getting on well but Misha is being very dominating, she keeps climbing up on his back and pushing him away from us with her bottom. we are currently using a water pistol that stops it at the time but she does keep going back for more....anyone got any tips to stop this behaviour? Im worried that this will cause a fight when we are out. up to now they have been seperaed by a pet gate when we go out but bandit is now leaping over this.

We stated misha on raw about a month ago and badit a week ago when we bought him home. It is going really well and misha is a different dog, calmer and more relaxed yet more energy when needed.

Our only question regarding raw feeding is both our dogs want more than the 2-3% guidelines. They are getting a mixture of half chickens, turkey legs, beef, pork ribs, lamb and fish. should I give them more or stick with the guidelines?
Also misha wont eat any offal i have tried it cold, frozen, room temp i even tried searing it but she wont touch it is this necessary?

They both get tons of excercise. they go for 3 long walks a day and my husband has started bikejoring with misha and she loves it but bandit is very lazy and is not impressed at running for longer than 5 miutes at the minute... any training tips???

thanks,

Chris.

Hi Chris and Hubby Phil
Welcome to the forum.
You have done the right thing by feeding your babies a raw diet.
I wouldn't go over the guidelines too much otherwise you will end up with a chubby pair but saying that if you keep up the lots of exercise they are burning it off so a bit over wont hurt too much.
From what you are doing so far sounds great as far as liver is concerned if you can get some into them once a week it would be preferred as it contains vitamin A.
Ours are a bit funny with liver and we just shave thin slivers off a frozen block and mix it with another meat on a meaty meat meal day. The slithers are as thin as you can possibly shave off.
Any questions that you may have post them up no matter how silly they sound as it is all relevant.
Once again welcome.
Paul.

Hi Chris.
My Max won`t eat offal either. I have to boil it for about 5-10 mins then he wolfs it down. The only fresh offal he will eat it from a freshly killed rabbit.

Welcome to the forum Chris and Phil! Get some pics up soon would love to see your two!

In regards to the domination its very much a case of Misha telling Bandit that this is her territory, shes putting herself above him in the pack. My older husky Indie is doing that to my 8 month old boy Logan, they have the odd scrap but its just husky play, it sounds much worse than it is! Just get to know the signs of Misha as the days go past, you should eventually be able to understand the difference between them playing and actually fighting, if you see her about to be OTT tell her in a loud voice "no" and use your body to block them from each other, dogs communicate with body language as much as voice so by doing this you will be using your position of alpha to say whats acceptable and whats not.
In regards to the dog gate, we found that by seperating them it actually made things worse, Indi was destructive and very vocal when we left them apart, as soon as we left them together he chilled out a lot more, you might find this is the case with yours too, for the first few times simulate the both of you leaving and just keep an eye on them through a window, that way you can see how they will behave when your gone and if theres any problems you can intervene.

If they are out and out fighting let us know and im sure between us we can advise you on what to do next :wcome

The raw feeding will definately help with their attitude with each other as they will be far more relaxed as opposed to the hyper moments you normally get when they are on ki**le. In regards to them wanting more take it as a sign that what your feeding is SOOOO much better than the dry food they are probably used to having. Stick to the 2-3% rule as going above this will lead to weight problems, if your huskies meet the breed standard i.e a thin layer of skin over the ribs ensuring that their not visible but you can still feel them is about right. If the ribs are visible then increase their food gradually, say 100g extra per day until they fill out a bit then reduce to the 2/3% again. If they are overweight then reduce by the same amount.

Three walks a day is great, what i would add is that its always best to stick with the 5 minutes per month of age so for a 10 month old husky 50 minutes is the limit until they are fully developed, which for huskies isnt until they are 2 years old. The bikejoring i would wait until they are at least 2 years old, adding too much stress on the hip joints can lead to HD later in life so its best to be cautious for now, you will have plenty of time to get them fit afterwards so dont worry about missing out.

Hope this helps, if you need anything else just shout :)

Thanks for all your replies.

I had read that we should wait for the bikejoring, the only reason we take misha is she is cross breed husky/collie and bounces of the walls. she needs the collie stimulation and excercise as well as the husky energy so it works well for her and our vet has said that she is fine to do this. Ill use the 5 min per month rule though that sounds good.

She is perfect size and weight now so ill stick to the 2-3% rule and try and get some offal into her.

Bandit on the other hand is very boney with all his ribs, hips etc visible (rescue dog again so he came to us very underweight) so ill do a little over until he fills out. He on the other hand will eat anything.

We have only had one real fight, (one of them dug up a chicken leg they had hid in the garden and we had a full blown fight), apart from that it seems to be all play I think I worry because she is my baby and there play is incredibly boisterous and vocal.

Thanks for all your advice, I was anxious posting for the first time but wish I had done it ages ago.

P.s I'll load some pics of misha and bandit shortly

:wcome to the forum Chris.

Try not to worry about the fighting to much. I know that's easier said than done, but it is a Husky trait to fight over food, you just need to control it if it happens.
We have the odd fight break out here between Ice & Codi, I just make sure that when they start fighting I'm in there like a shot to stop it, each one are then reprimanded for bad behaviour.
I usually do this by getting down at their level & make full eye contact, telling them that fights are bad & I won't stand for them in a very strong, firm voice.

Bandit will soon fill out, by feeding slightly more you will soon see a difference but don't worry to much, just as long as he eats he'll be fine.
Well done for taking on a rescue in his underweight condition. We had our first experience of an underweight rescue last year, so I know where you are coming from.

Just a quick word with Liver, Please remember to go STEADY! Liver should be no more than the size of your thumb (if you look at a mans sized thumb from the tip to the base where it joins at the wrist & imagine it as a drumstick - That's the approximate size to feed a week - Divide it between the week, say over 3 days)

Here is the guideline ratio once more for guidance: 80% Raw Meat - 10% Raw Edible Bone - 5% Raw Offal - 5% Raw Liver.

Chris, we are more than happy for you to post, the more you post the merrier, please don't be anxious, we love reading posts & looking at everyone lovely Husky pics! :)

Once again, Welcome to the forum.

Hiya Chris welcome to the forum.
Will they not even eat heart? Storm wouldn't to start with but now he wolfs it down.
As far as the bikejoring is concerned have you thought about a scooter?.
I have a lab collie cross who is permanently bouncing of the walls and she is my lead running dog.
Silver who is my oldest Husky, she's almost 3, is the directions of the team, she knows left right stop etc. And storm is only 5 months old, the only thing hes done with the scooter is pee on it lol.

Hi

I have thought about a scooter just letting them find their feet.

Msha wont touch any kind of offal. tried frozen slivers today, she licked it a couple of times then walked away. im going to try mixing it with her meat tonight and see if i can trick her lol

Bandit on the other hand will eat anything including my spag bol from the cooker last night... little minkey.

Im now armed with a water pistol and this seems to calm the fights down immediatly I only need to bring it out and show them now. im also getting to know the tell tale signs that its serious or just play.

The idea of getting a pooch from a breeder when there are so many unloved dogs out there was sad. Hence y we got our misha. Intro in husky life. when it came to number 2 we knew it would need to be a rescue husky so we contacted shwa. They were great!

Thanks for all our advice and im sure ill be posting again when issue arise which seems to be daily at the mo lol. its like havingkids all over again.

Good luck with the offal.
This may sound gross but you could try liquidizing it and freezing it in ice cube trays, that way even if they are licking it they are still ingesting some of it.

Hi Chris.
Welcome to the forum.
Just a suggestion here, it would be good if you can get Misha to eat offal when it is given.
What you are doing is good in my knowledge of trying to get her to eat offal. Keep doing what you are doing, cold, frozen, room temp or lightly seared in a very hot pan.
I sear offal for one of my Huskies, he really hates the texture of raw offal, so my only way of getting it into him is sear it.
I flash fry in a smoking hot pan for 10 seconds both sides, remove and cool on a cold plate for one minute then feed.

You could try offering in any-one of those mentioned above in smaller sized pieces until Misha eats it. Offal can be a peculiar texture to a Husky, so offering smaller may help.
I would also suggest you leave it down for as long as you can. Also re-offer it at every meal until Misha eats it.
Try adding small pieces to the other types of meats you feed.
Any kind of offal is good for your Husky. Persevere with it.
You could try adding a small amount of cheese grated with a box grater. Rub the grated cheese all over leaving enough stuck to the offal so Misha smells it differently to just being offal.
Please Let us know how this works.
