Hi Paul...

Been raw feeding a few months now.
Probably not as strict as the diet should be but my dogs are small and i feed them what they seem to like.
Feed mainly:
Lamb Hearts
Beef Hearts
Chicken,every part
Pork Hearts
Pork Ribs
Pork Spine
Minced Beef (only because finding cheap cuts of beef is hard)
Beef / Lamb Liver
Rabbit & Venison when i can get some off pals who do a little hunting

http://eskimohuskies...tyle_emoticons/default/Hello.gif Frank, Welcome to the forum.
I think you are doing a grand job mate, "Raw Feeding" your lovely short legged Jack Russell Terriers. I am very impressed Posted Image

From the list above, I think you are feeding a good variety of raw meats to your girls. Well done :)
I have done a little research for you into the breed & found out an Ideal Adult Weight.
This ranges between the weights of 10 - 15 Pounds (4. 6 KG - 7. 7 KG)
So an Ideal Adult Weight would be between these figures based on proportion.
With this in mind I can give you an approximate amount of "Raw Food" to feed at the rate based on 2% of the Ideal Adult Weight Posted Image

At the lower end of weight, 5 KG (rounded up) x 2% = 100 Grams Raw feed a day.
The top end would be 8 KG (rounded up) x 2% = 160 Grams Raw feed a day.

I tried to use the best weight & feed guidance above on your description of "Short Legged type" as there are 3 types of JRT breed! I think I have got it right, please let me know if I am wrong, I hope not Posted Image

Frank, the mince I understand about, however I don't recommend it.
I will try to help you though with alternatives :)

Do you have an Asda near you in Southern Ireland, or a Morrisons (Safeway) ?
We get our Braising Beef from these 2 stores, as they are the cheapest supermarkets for this cut.
Another good cut of Red raw meat on the bone is a Pork Hock (Shank) we get ours from Morrisons (Safeway), but you can pick them up cheap from anywhere if they stock them.
Or ask your Butcher for 3 small Pork Hocks. (Don't tell him you feed them to your dogs or you will get a load of bare bones that are just no good to man or your JRT's, unless you know him & he knows you raw feed anyway, then he will know you need bone that's surrounded by lots of Meaty Meat")

Your Butcher will also have whole Lamb Breast on the bone (the whole thing is what you want)
We get them for £1.50 - £2.00 Each. (€1.77 - €2.37) Warning, these are big and you will have to cut them up, but they will last you for days :)

Here is a list of Raw Meat Cuts, to help you out further.
Any questions, just shout out.
Ivan.

Sound advice there, thanks

Yeah they come in at the 5-9 kilo mark.

I don't weight it really, just operate off the dogs condition!
Never tried the lamb breast on bone, thought it would have been a lot dearer than 2 pound or so.
I mainly buy my meat from my butchers, we have a specialist pork butcher in town and the other one is a general butcher.
I saw Pork hocks (shanks)? yesterday, 3 for 5 euro, good or bad?

I get Lamb hearts at 10 for 5.50 euro
Pork hearts at 6 kilos for 10 euro
Chicken necks - free
Pork spines - free
Whole beef liver 5 euro
Beef heart 3 euro each
Pork ribs, bout 12 together for 3 euro
Mince is a rare one, 2.50 for 800 grams, TESCO
Basically shop for cheap deals in TESCO'S and DUNNES (Irish store), no safeways or morrisons, got whole chickens for 99 cents each recently, bought 7 of them!

Frank,
No problems with weighing, you are doing a great job with *eye balling* the weight of raw food & the condition of your JRT's.

We too try to get some of our raw meats from the Butchers, although we do find some of the offers offered in supermarkets to be a good deal when they have their cheap deals on. So we do the same and buy as much as possible, then freeze it.

The Pork hocks you saw 3 for €5.00. In English pounds that's £4.22. WOW! I can tell you they are CHEAP! :) Go buy them!
Your girls will have so much fun eating on one a piece, when they have finished what they want, pick up & carrier bag them & fridge until the next feed time. We never throw anything away, they eat it all!
Once they get the meat off & down to the bone, let them have a good feed of the bone & play with it.
It sometime looks like a grave yard here after ours have had their fill from a Pork hock lol
You can always buy them and freeze them too, then feed during the summer months frozen (helps keep flies down) as a big meal & leave down until they have eaten all they can. Then bag & fridge & feed again as mentioned before :)

Whole Chickens at 99 cents (0.84p) each. Frank can you send some over lol They are cheap, very cheap :)
Keep up the great work Frank. Well done mate Posted Image Your girls are gorgeous :)

P.S. Everything we buy is either on offer, in the Smart price or Value range, 3 for 2 deals or reduced etc.

Welcome to the forum!!

It's great to see owners of other dogs finding this place!

Please get some pics up of your girls...and some information from your point of view on the breed! I'm always keen to learn new breeds!

Welcome to the forum!
Another option for beef would be the shin as that's pretty cheap or as already mentioned any braising cuts of steak.
